Welcome to “Our Local Community”, Lake Macquarie

Welcome to the official website of the dedicated, thoughtful and vigilant “Our Local Community” Party, of Lake Macquarie.

Accessible and affordable Housing, Business barriers removal, more GP’s, faster Development Application processing for Building and Business. We aspire to address these critical issues as well as the Community infrastructure issues that take way too long to be rectified.

Our Local Candidates

Toni Bowyer

Candidate for Councillor West Ward

I consider myself fortunate to be a life-long resident of Lake Macquarie. I’ve held many jobs across several industries, including in the public service sector where one of my early roles was in the Engineering Department of LMCC, where I worked on kerb and gutter plans and a clever new concept called ‘roundabouts’. I’ve played competitive sports my entire life and share an enthusiasm for netball with my adult daughter who continues to represent Lake Macquarie at state levels. I love how people come together and volunteer their time and leadership skills toward the successful operation of sporting clubs, music groups, outdoor health and fitness and other recreational pursuits around our beautiful shores.

It is important to me that my grandchildren can experience these wonderful community facilities and are able to contribute to these services as they grow up and it is for that reason I wish to ensure that our Sport and Rec Associations are given the support they require to maintain safe and vibrant facilities that Our Local Community can be proud of.

I believe Small Businesses play an integral role in the circular success of Lake Macquarie as they enhance the tourist experience, support neighbouring businesses and sponsor our clubs and sporting teams, therefore they must be helped with the necessary infrastructure required for ongoing health, safety and ease of access.

It is my intention to be recognised as a reliable Representative for these important contributors in the community and I’m proud to be part of the dedicated team Our Local Community, Lake Macquarie.

John Gilbert

Candidate for Mayor

I served as a Councillor in the East Ward from 2016 to 2021. This experience was invaluable in teaching me how to engage with the people in our community. Also, it was clear that being on Council is hard work and long hours, if the job is to be done properly.

My Vision for Lake Macquarie is a community where Housing is affordable, and we adopt a culture that says a Home is a Human Right. Local Government is the front line of housing development, with many Councillors avoiding the whole crisis because of fear, lack of knowledge and the huge amount of work required. But I embrace the challenge, because I am passionate for Community access to affordable Rental housing and Home ownership.

Sporting and interest groups have even lost use of their facility, and this is unacceptable.

I stand to defend and provide support for these groups, like Valentine heated pool, footy clubs, groups that use public and Council owned facilities as well as all other sporting and interest groups.

I urge all voters to examine who they will vote for. Too often people do no research, then vote for a party name that seems ok. This is the prime reason people are complaining so often about the attrocious underperformance of their Councillors, when in fact, it’s the voters who gave these Councillors the position they hold, and neglect. If you can’t find a serious policy list and committment, from a Candidate who actually lives in the area they claim they will represent, then your vote for that candidate is set to be a wasted vote. Please vote with care and consideration.

Our Local Core Beliefs

Kerb and gutter in your street, is more important than statues on the foreshore

Traditional geographic names should not be changed as a virtue signalling exercise

A Community Liaison Officer is more valuable than a DEI Consultant

All recreational pursuits that our community members pursue, are essential to the vibrancy of a community and shouldn't be outlawed or supressed by “politically correct” committees

Council should not spend time and money pursuing virtue signalling agendas, in support of virtue signalling groups, State, or Federal Government

Financially disadvantaged members of the community should be considered and assisted wherever practically possible with Council Resources

Housing is a Human Right and the creation of homes and the acceleration of Development Applications is Critical

Business related Development Applications must be viewed as critical to employment and the economy, with a “time of the essence” approach

The protection of Lake Macquarie’s Historical sites and structures is critical to our culture
